Naoto Hattori

Dreams have the ability to welcome us into the deepest corners of our minds. Whether they take us back to relive a pleasant memory, a mash-up of the days activities, or a nightmare exposing our worst fears, these dreams aid in increasing our awareness of ourselves and the world around us, and New York City painter and School of Visual Arts graduate Naoto Hattori believes that the same effect can be achieved while he is creating his surreal, mystical paintings. Hattori uses these paintings to open his mind and explore his unique vision, letting his steady stream-of-consciousness guide his brush to form a beautiful cohesive display of seemingly random shapes and objects that represent a mental map of his true state of mind. Don’t miss the chance to see these mental maps in Hattori’s newest solo show entitled “Mind Portrait” opening at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, CA this Saturday.

Mia Mäkilä

When you combine the forboding emotions of fear, angst, madness, and rage with the stylings of gloomy movie directors such as David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, and Tim Burton, then top it all off with a twist of creative humor, you will end up in the dark lowbrow world of self-taught swedish artist Mia Mäkila. A fantastic world in which demons, monsters, and the deformed dance and play, shedding a positive light on their rather dismal surroundings. If only we all could take a lesson from Mia’s art and realize that in every doleful situtation there exists a bit of hope, promise, and possibility, the world just may be a happier place.

Mia Araujo

With a passion for storytelling and character complexities, Los Angeles painter and Otis College of Art and Design alumni Mia Araujo explores the unseen forces of human thoughts, memories, and emotions that make up personal identity and mythology. Mia brings these complexities to the canvas by creating beautiful arrangements of tiny characters who surround a larger, more central subject, exposing an intricate narrative in great detail. Don’t miss Mia’s work which is currently on display at the Corey Helford Gallery in “Into the Woods”, the first solo show by the artist. The show runs until June 2nd.

Snap! Orlando’s “Urban Wild”

Last night we attended the opening of Snap! Orlando‘s incredible photography exhibit “Urban Wild” held at the Urban Wild warehouse in downtown Orlando, and the work we saw was simply outstanding. Some of the world’s best photographers showcased their latest and best work in the 15,000 square foot space, including original pieces from Oleg Dou, Moby, Travis Dove, Ben Lowy, Frank Day, Gabriel Wickbold, Gregg Segal, and Tom Chambers. The icing on the cake was being able to see a live mural demonstration by Orlando artist and Art Attacks host Andrew Spear working to the solid beats of Orlando’s favorite DJ Nigel John.

Don’t miss the chance to see this event as it is only on display until Sunday, May 13th.

Tom Chambers

Some of the most emotional situations we experience as humans occur when we are in life-changing transitions. Whether transitioning from child to adult, or just adjusting to new surroundings, these delicate changes often create tension and disrupt a fragile balance within ourselves. It is these moments in time that photographer Tom Chambers looks to expose by using a signature photomontage technique combining sevaral camera shots into one cohesive photo. The end result is a well-lit combination of reality and dreams which hint at the infinite possibilities of the future.

Don’t miss Tom Chambers’ work which will be part of the Snap! Orlando exhibit “Urban Wild” opening tonight at the “Urban Wild” warehouse in downtown Orlando. This must-see event will be on display until May 13, 2012.

Gregg Segal

To help promote the extraordinary Snap! Orlando photography exhibit coming to our city this weekend, we have teamed up with the Snap! Orlando crew to showcase a few of the artists that will be included in the show. First up is the gifted photographer Gregg Segal who uses a storyteller approach to taking photographs by focusing on dramatic themes of irony. The subjects in his photographs range from superheroes to CEO’s, all of which leave us wondering what untold secrets they may be hiding from us and the camera. Try to discover the secrets for yourself when the main Snap! Orlando event “Urban Wild” opens on May 10th, 2012 at the “Urban Wild” warehouse in downtown Orlando.

Frank Frazetta

In Johannah O’Donnell‘s fourth pick as guest blogger on the site we are shown the powerful work of one of America’s greatest fantasy and sci-fi artists, Frank Frazetta. At the young age of 2, Frazetta’s grandmother encouraged him to create by stopping by his desk to see what he was working on, then paying him a penny to continue the work. By the time he was 8 years old he had already surpassed the talent of his teachers, who at that time didn’t know how to even teach the boy anything. Then, at age 15, Frazetta began emersing himself in the comic industry. After years of work he began to be recognized by his peers and eventually started to diversify his portfolio with many of the images we know him so well for, including the legendary work he did to depict Conan: The Barbarian. Frazetta died in May 2010.
