Sterling Hundley

The fourth pick from our guest blogger Chris B. Murray is a talented artist from Virginia name Sterling Hundley. The illustrator, who is an Assistant Professor at VCU as well as an annual instructor for the Illustration Academy held at Ringling College of Art and Design, creates emotionally charged artwork that’s muted by desaturated tones and sometimes unusual form. These unnatural techniques seem to work well for Hundley as his impressive client list is topped with names such as GQ, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and many more.

Eric Fortune

Art Attacks Guest blogger Chris B. Murray brings us his second pick of the week!

Living in Columbus, Ohio, painter Eric Fortune received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and graduated with the Outstanding Senior Award. Fortune’s work is a soft representation of true emotional metaphors containing subjects immersed in their own sensational worlds full of imperious surrealism and dynamic beauty. These worlds casually and unassumingly charm and satisfy the viewer and bring a certain truth that may otherwise lay dormant. Check out some Eric’s work below.

Maclaim Crew

Please welcome our newest Art Attacks guest blogger, Philadelphia illustrator Chris B. Murray (previously on Art Attacks HERE). Throughout the week Chris will be showing us his top 5 favorite artists and judging by his first selection, it’s going to be a pretty good week.

The dynamic crew of photorealistic graffiti painters known has Maclaim consists of four insanely talented artists, CASE, RUSK, TA55O, and AKUT of Herakut. The four started working together in 1999 on various projects, and by 2001 the name was solidified. The crew completed projects around Germany with style and integrity, and only expanded from there. The members of Maclaim also continue to expand individually, not only in the streets, but it galleries as well. Check out a sample of work from the members of Maclaim.

Mariel Clayton

If you have ever wondered what Barbie and her friends do once playtime is over, then the photographs of Mariel Clayton are sure to spark your interest. In this last installment of Honey‘s top 5 favorite artists, Mariel Clayton tells intricate stories of lust, revenge, and despair by creating highly detailed scenes using an assortment of different dolls and a menagerie of carefully placed objects. She then photographs them, creating a unique vision which showcases the “naughty” side to one of society’s best-selling toys.

Esther Stocker

Welcome to the third post from our guest blogger Honey from Sweet-Station.com.  Today she brings us the meticulous geometrical installations and design of Vienna-based artist Esther Stocker.  By using minimalist techniques and the uncertainty of abstraction, Stocker is able to transform any space into a visual riddle by playing off of perception and the relationship between the viewer and the artwork.  Check out some samples of Stocker’s work below.

Sam3

Guest blogger Honey from the creative blog Sweet-Station.com brings us another fantastic find from the art world, Spanish street artist Sam3.  He is as mysterious as the silhouetted subjects he paints. Since 1993, Sam3 has left his mark on city walls and abandoned billboards around the world with a message that “our society desperately needs new ways to face the dark and difficult near future.” His art reflects just that. Using symbols of recession, imbalance, and environmental revitalization, Sam3’s shadowy figures bring forth some of the darkest realities of today’s way of life, while consistently maintaining a dualistic, light-hearted approach. Sam3’s art does not stop on walls and billboards either. His creativity has taken the form of sculpture and animation which you can view on his site http://sam3.es. Check out some of Sam3’s work below and let us know what you think!

Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Artists work in many different sizes and mediums, but in the case of environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who are brought to us by our weeklong guest-curator Honey from the creative blog Sweet-Station.com, bigger is always better.

The couple, known only by their first names, have taken over such famous landmarks as Berlin’s Reichstag, Paris’ Pont-Neuf, and Italy’s famous Roman Wall with their extra-large installations, often wrapping them in fabric and allowing us to view these familiar landscapes in a new and beautiful way. It does not stop with wrapping either. The duo has also tackled other large-scale installations such as ‘The Gates’ in New York City’s Central Park, ‘The Umbrellas’ in Japan, and ‘Surrounded Islands’ in Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

Francisco Jose de Goya

The final post from this weeks Art Attacks guest curator, Derek Gores, is a name you might recognize, and although Francisco Jose de Goya is most famous for his paintings, he also did a series of some pretty incredible aquatint prints. As Goya himself describes, the series, entitled “Caprichos,” depicts “the innumerable foibles and follies to be found in any civilized society, and from the common prejudices and deceitful practices which custom, ignorance, or self-interest have made usual.” When the series was first released as an album in 1799, it produced adverse reviews and was later removed from circulation. Check out a few sample works from “Caprichos” below.
