From P-Jay Fidler’s website:

“P-Jay Fidler’s work takes the familiar and seeks to re-contextualize it to create non linear narratives. What results is a conversation about the impermanent and circular nature of life, the ultimate death that confronts every person and the physical, tangible ephemera that we create in our wake. Dealing with creation, existence, absence, and transformation his imagery ranges from the surreal to the ambiguous. Born in a small farming community in central California, Fidler left to attend and graduate from the Art Center College of Design and now works and lives in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in a number of publications including SPIN and PLAYBOY magazine, and he has been shown in galleries all over the country.”

Person (living)

I was never one who was going to have kids, and that stayed with me up until my 30’s Then one day I wanted them and now I have 3 daughters. My oldest is 3 and my twin daughters are 14 months. I am so inspired by all of them but mainly my daughter London who is 3 and is at that creative age. She is super talented ( I am sure all parents say that) and everyday she creates something new and beautiful. If it’s making dresses out of Play-Doh for her Disney princesses or building elaborate castles out of Legos, nothing hinders her from her creative visions. She has no rules when it comes to creativity and I think thats how we all should be. She just sits and creates with nothing else on her mind but the task in front of her.

Person (dead)

There are so many people I could put here, artists , musicians, poets etc. But this spot is specially reserved for my grandmother. She just passed away a few years ago at 94 and I think of her daily. Without her I don’t think I would be writing this article. She always pushed me to do something better and tried to keep me on the straight and narrow as much as she could. I was her first grandson so I am sure she spoiled me a little but she taught me so many life lessons as well. She was strong, tough as nails, funny, opinionated and most of all honest. She hated most of my paintings and always wanted me to just paint pretty cats and animals but she always supported me and once I started selling some of these “Ugly Things” she was vey proud, though she couldn’t believe someone would want to buy one let alone hangout in there house!  It is that kind of honesty that made her special and I keep a picture of her over my desk so she is literally watching over me keeping me honest.

Place

I grew up in a small country town in central California and I have always been inspired by it’s surroundings. Flatlands, orange groves, rolling hills, lakes, fishing and swimming holes and the Sequoia Mountains are all grouped together within an hours drive. I still find inspiration just driving through the rolling hills and country roads many times with no other cars in site, just alone with the beautiful country side and my thoughts.

Movie

For the last 5 or 6 years my favorite movie has been “Bronson” staring Tom Hardy. I can watch this movie anytime anywhere and highly recommend it if you have not had the pleasure of viewing this modern classic. Beautifully shot, beautiful soundtrack, beautiful glorified true story. One of my favorite scenes: the Loonies Dancing as Bronson is dealing with his new surroundings.  I feel like Bronson in this scene all the time!

Music

Music is very important in my creative process and has stemmed so many of my paintings. The first thing I do when I enter the studio is to turn on music and just sit and listen for a minute and let the sounds set my mood as I get everything prepped. As of late I have really been into Moonface. Every song is more beautiful then the next. The lyrics are poetry and the music is melodic. One my favorite is “Heartbreaking Bravery” with the line “When you see names of angels on the back of your eyelids, That look like they were carved in a fit of violence.” Just beautiful.
