Robert Williams

For her third pick as guest blogger on the site, Orlando painter Johannah O’Donnell brings us one of the most influential figures in the contemporary art world, the insanely talented painter, cartoonist, and founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, Robert Williams. Williams, who was born in 1943, is well known for his vast contributions to the lowbrow art movement, including accidentally coining the term ‘Lowbrow’ itself. He states “There was never any intention to make the title of my book the name of a fledging art movement but, over time, that seems to be what has transpired.” Check out some Williams’ wild work below, and be sure to pick up the May 2012 issue of Juxtapoz Magazine feauturing a special examination on the state of Public Art in 2012.

Mike Kelley

As our current guest blogger on the site this week, painter Johannah O’Donnell brings us her second pick about the late American artist Mike Kelley.

Kelley’s passion for the arts was universal, and over the years he experimented with numerous mediums including drawings, collages, paintings, performance, video, found objects, and installations. Using these avenues, along with a respected involvement in the underground music scene, Kelley explored complex issues such as normality, criminality and perversion among different classes and gender profiles. In January 2012, the iconic contemporary artist was found dead in an aparent suicide which stemmed from depression. He is a driving force that will surely be missed in the art world for many years to come. Check out some pictures below from some of Kelley’s more well-known installations and art pieces.

Wayne Thiebaud

This week we welcome painter Johannah O’Donnell to the site as a guest blogger where she will be showing us what type of art inspires and motivates her to paint. If you aren’t familiar with Johannah’s work, please see a previous Art Attacks post on her art HERE.

For her first pick of the week, Johannah has chosen an artist often assiciated with the Pop Movement due to his painted objects of mass culture such as cakes, toilets, toys, and lipsticks. The artist, Wayne Thiebaud, however, has stated he did not paint these items as Pop Art, but instead out of nostalgia. These objects, often painted in repetition, were done so by using heavy pigment and exaggerated colors. Beware, these paintings will definitely cause a sudden spike in hunger!

Brad Kunkle

As an artist living and working in New York City, Brad Kunkle creates extraordinary paintings using oils in combination with gold and silver leaf. The results are simply stunning and can be described as a dreamy photorealistic tributes to other master painters such as the well-recognized leaf artist, Gustav Klimt. But don’t compare Kunkle to Klimt. His work is truly in a league all by itself. You can currently see some of Kunkle’s newest work in a solo show entitled “Gilded Wilderness” which is hanging now at the Arcadia Fine Art Gallery in Soho. The show runs until May 5th.

Andrew Spear & Scott Scheidly @ Bold Hype

Late last year ArtAttacksOnline.com documented our host Andrew Spear and painter Scott Scheidly’s show at the Bold Hype Gallery in NYC. Since both artists are from our hometown of Orlando we were able to capture them preparing for the show, and gain a unique insight as to what it takes to put together such an event. We then followed them up to New York to record the show’s opening and joined them as they explored one of the biggest art cities in the world.
