Stella Im Hultberg's "Stranger"

Portland based painter Stella Im Hultberg has been under the radar for a few years. Aside from a few group shows, she’s been taking time away to grow her family and enjoy the adventure of motherhood.
This time away has also cause her to refine her signature aesthetics of very recognizable ladies created with inks, oils, and watercolor adorned with floral motifs and contemplative yet, peaceful faces.
Her solo show at Spoke Art in San Francisco entitled “Stranger” hosts a plethora for figures representative of the ever-changing female identity. They float in a whimsical aura suggesting ideas of  the anew.

From the artist:

“There was a lot of “heaviness of love” that I felt since becoming a parent, a very heavy-feeling blessing. I’m sure many parents would agree. Maybe overabundance of flowers are a bit related to that – delicate flowers in heaps can become very heavy and hard to bear. Even the most beautiful things that can make it hard to breathe for you. But things happen in life, not just children, that can make you change before you realize. And suddenly you realize that you’re different. You see that you’re still you, but somehow you aren’t you anymore – you’re a stranger to yourself.”

Stranger is on view at Spoke Art Gallery October 1st – 24th, 2015
